The "Summer research project" is part of Japan's education system. Students observe plants, create art, and explore various themes, then present their process and results.
The SOUL COVENANT staff decided to try their own Summer research project!
The theme is "Let's Make an Eve Figure."
I will explain the process of making the figure in three parts, so please stay tuned.
Production Staff:
Shinpei Naito
Thirdverse 3D Character Modeling
I create figures as a hobby. I usually focus on male characters, but this is my first time challenging myself with a female character.
Part 3: Finally Complete!
In Part 2, we completed everything up to before coloring. If you haven't checked that article yet, please take a look!
It's finally time for coloring!
This is getting exciting!
For the base coat and painting process, I entrusted "FLATLAND Hirachi Plastic Arts," where I always receive great finishing work. They are skilled artists based in Kochi.
I asked for touch-ups and adjustments based on the progress photos to get closer to the look I envisioned, with a special focus on the facial details.
I'm grateful that they have faithfully reflected these adjustments in the final product.
After painstakingly removing support and layer marks to smooth the surface, it's finally time for coloring. To facilitate the painting process, bamboo skewers were used to lift the parts like this.
I did so many test prints that I ended up with three bodies, lol.
Each part was colored while referring to the designed model data.
A lot of effort has gone into the painting of the eyes.
I wanted to add a glossy, metallic look to the hair, so a gradation of clear blue mixed with pearl paint was sprayed to create the finish shown here.
Additionally, to make the finished piece stand out even more, blue fluorescent paint was applied to the floating ring above the head, the blue lines on the clothing, fingertips, and other parts to make them glow. When you shine a black light on it, it lights up like this.
And, about two weeks later...
It's finally completed!
When you shine a black light...
It's glowing nicely.
It really creates a nice atmosphere and I'm looking forward to taking some photos.
So, here we go, the photo shoot!
We had the shoot in the company conference room with Producer Okamura and the publicity staff.
Okamura: "Wow!"
Marketing Staff: "Wow... it's beautiful."
Such kind words are truly appreciated! I was really nervous to create a female character figure for the first time, but I'm glad they enjoyed it.
The marketing staff's favorite shot is this one, apparently.
The female staff said "beautiful..."I was very happy to hear that. They chose this shot from among various angles and lighting setups.
While white lighting alone looked good, we also used colored lighting to bring out SOUL COVENANT's uniqueness. It added a sense of depth to the atmosphere.
When you rotate Eve, the hair shines rainbow colors and looks even more beautiful. I want to thank Hirachi Plastic Arts for using pearl colors.
How did you find my summer science project?
There are many areas that I want to improve upon, so I will leverage this experience to create another new piece.
Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to bring such a wonderful character to life!
SOUL COVENANT depicts a fierce battle between humanity and machines in a desolate world, crafted with intricate world-building, captivating characters and stories. It's also recommended for VR beginners, so if you haven't played it yet, please consider giving it a try.
Until we meet again! Bye!
